Drum loops to jam over
Updated 2026-10-26
A metronome tells you where the beat is; a drum loop tells you how it feels. Playing over a real groove trains the part of timing a click cannot: sitting with the kick and snare, leaving space, and landing with the band. Pick a loop, let it repeat, and build on top.
Why a drum loop beats a click
A click is the same sound on every beat. A drum pattern has accents, ghost notes and a swing that pull you into a style, and it makes rushing or dragging obvious in a way a click does not.
It is also more fun, which matters more than it sounds: you practise longer when it feels like playing.

Picking the tempo and style
- Tempo: start where you can play cleanly, then move up. Hip hop and lo-fi sit around 70 to 95 BPM, pop and rock around 110 to 125, house and trap higher.
- Style: pick the one that matches what you want to play. Funk tightens your rhythm; latin teaches syncopation; lo-fi leaves room for melody.
Jam Looper's Beats library, new in version 3.3, has 55 drum loops across hip hop, lo-fi, pop, funk, rock, house, trap and latin, from 70 to 180 BPM, each with its tempo shown. 7 are free.
Building a song on top
- Add the drum loop first. It sets the loop length and the song's tempo.
- Record the bass or the chords on the next track while the drums play.
- Add a melody or vocals once the groove feels settled.
- Balance the layers so the drums support rather than bury the rest.
Every loop in the library is four bars, so ideas fall into natural four-bar phrases. 4 tracks are free and 8 come with Pro.

Common questions
Where can I get free drum loops to jam over?
Jam Looper includes 55 drum loops in hip hop, lo-fi, pop, funk, rock, house, trap and latin; 7 are free and play right away, and the rest come with Pro.
What BPM should I practise at?
The tempo you can play cleanly, then 5 to 10 BPM higher once it feels easy. For most styles that means starting between 80 and 110 BPM.
Can I use drum loops with a looper app?
Yes. Add the drum loop as the first track and it sets the loop length; everything you record afterwards lines up with it.
