How to beatbox and loop on your phone

Record the kick and snare pattern first, because it sets the loop length and the groove. Then layer hi-hats, then bass, then anything melodic. The mistake almost everyone makes is trying to perform the whole beat in one pass — separate layers sound tighter and let you fix one element without losing the rest.

Mic technique, which matters more than you think

A kick drum sound is a burst of air, and a phone microphone a few centimetres away will clip on it. Back off further than feels natural — 20 to 30 centimetres — and let the mic hear the sound rather than the air.

For hi-hats and rim sounds you can come much closer. Different distances for different sounds is exactly why layering separately beats performing it all at once.

Build it in this order

  1. Kick and snare only. The skeleton. This layer defines the loop.
  2. Hi-hats. Closer to the mic, quieter, more of them.
  3. Bass. A hummed or growled root note, well below everything else.
  4. Texture. Vocal scratches, clicks, a sung pad.
  5. The melody or the rap, over the top.

Why does my kick sound distorted?

You are too close. A kick is a burst of air that overloads a phone microphone at close range. Back off to 20–30cm and the sound cleans up immediately.

How many layers do I need for a beat?

Three is usually enough — kick and snare, hats, and bass. A fourth for texture and a fifth for melody covers most arrangements.

Do I need a special microphone for beatboxing?

No. The built-in phone microphone is fine as long as you manage distance: further back for low-frequency sounds, closer for hats and clicks.
