Sing the melody once and let it repeat, then sing a third above it while you listen. That is the whole technique. The part people get wrong is not the theory — it is that they try to sing the harmony from memory instead of tuning it live against the loop playing in their ears.
Which note to sing
A third above the melody is the safe default and the one your ear already knows from almost every pop chorus. A third below is warmer and sits better under a high lead. A fifth is more open and slightly medieval; an octave is not really harmony but thickens a chorus enormously.
If you sing one interval consistently through a whole phrase it will clash somewhere, because the chord underneath moves. Singers who improvise harmony are mostly moving between a third and a fourth to stay inside the chord. You will hear it when it goes wrong long before you can explain why.
Finding the harmony without knowing any theory
- Record the melody and let it loop. Listen through two or three repeats without singing.
- Hum any note and slide it slowly upward until it locks. There is an unmistakable moment where two notes stop sounding like two notes.
- Hold that note and sing the phrase keeping the same distance from the melody.
- If it sours in the middle, let that one note move by a step and come back. That is what a real harmony singer does.
This works because you are tuning against something you can hear, not against an idea of the note. It is also why headphones matter more here than for any other kind of looping.
Why your second part drifts flat
Almost always because you cannot hear the first one well enough. Sung through a phone speaker, the loop competes with the sound of your own skull and you unconsciously push under the note.

The other cause is fatigue. Harmony parts are usually held longer than melody parts, and a tired voice sags. Record the harmony before the twentieth take of the lead, not after.
