A vocal looper records a phrase you sing, plays it back on a loop, and lets you sing more parts over the top until you have an arrangement. It is the tool behind one person sounding like a choir. The looping part is the same whether it is a pedal on the floor or an app on your phone — what differs is how you start and stop it.
What it actually does
You sing something. It repeats. You sing something else over it, and now both repeat. Keep going and you have bass, harmony, percussion and a lead, all from one voice.
The first phrase you record is the important one, because its length becomes the length of the loop. Everything afterwards fits inside that window, which is why experienced loopers think carefully about the first take and treat the rest as comparatively cheap.
Hardware or an app
Dedicated vocal loopers exist as floor units — the TC-Helicon and Boss families are the ones most singers encounter — and they are genuinely better for live performance. A footswitch keeps your hands free, the latency is negligible, and there is an XLR input for a proper microphone.
A phone app wins on everything else: it costs nothing to try, it is already in your pocket when the idea arrives, and it is far better for writing than performing. The honest split is that hardware is for the stage and an app is for the sofa, the rehearsal room and the twenty seconds before you forget the idea.

What to look for in a vocal looper
- Enough tracks to hold an arrangement. Bass, chords, percussion, lead is four. Fewer than that and you are mixing parts together on one layer.
- Per-track volume. A vocal stack lives or dies on the bass part sitting under everything else.
- A latency setting if you use wireless headphones, because Bluetooth delay will otherwise push every layer slightly late.
- An honest export. If you want the recording out, check what formats it actually produces.
