Start with a free app on the phone you already own. Looping is a habit you either form or you do not, and finding that out should not cost £200. If you are still using it daily after a month, then buy hardware — and by then you will know which features you actually need.

Your first ten minutes

1. Record four bars of one chord. Not a progression. One chord.
2. Listen to it loop. Get used to the join — that is the bit that feels strange at first.
3. Play a melody over it. Anything.
4. Delete it and do it again. The first three attempts are always throwaways and knowing that removes the pressure.

The mistakes everyone makes in week one

• Starting too complicated. A four-chord progression at speed is a hard first loop. One chord, slowly, teaches you more.
• Recording the first take badly and building on it anyway. The base loop sets the length for everything. If it is wrong, start again — it costs ten seconds.
• Blaming yourself for latency. If every layer lands late by the same amount, that is monitoring delay, not your timing. Set the offset and switch off Bluetooth.
• Adding layers because you can. Three good layers beat six competing ones. Almost always.

What to learn, roughly in order

• Recording a clean base loop with an obvious pulse.
• Muting and unmuting layers to arrange on the fly.
• Undoing a layer without losing the others.
• Loop modes — strict, soft, loose, and every N repeats of the base loop — once you want a pad to ring past the base loop.
• Exporting, so the good ones do not evaporate.

When to buy a pedal

When you start playing to people. That is genuinely the line. A footswitch matters on stage and nowhere else, and until then the money buys you nothing you will use.

If you get there, you will also know whether you need two switches or five, stereo or mono, and how many minutes of recording time — questions that are unanswerable before you have looped for a while.
