What is a loop station?

A loop station is a device that records a short phrase you play and immediately repeats it, so you can play something new over the top. Do that a few times and one person sounds like a band. That is the entire idea — everything else is detail.

How it works, in order

1. You record a phrase. Four bars of chords, a bass line, a beat.
2. It repeats, seamlessly. The end joins the start with no gap.
3. You play over it. The loop keeps going while you add a melody.
4. You layer that too. Now two parts repeat and you add a third.

The loop is the backing band. You are always the newest member of it.

Why musicians use one

• Practice. Record a chord progression and solo over it for twenty minutes without a backing track that never changes.
• Writing. Hear whether a bass line works under the chords instead of imagining it.
• Performing solo. Build a full arrangement live in front of an audience.
• Catching ideas. Get a riff down before it disappears.

Pedal or app?

A hardware loop station is a box on the floor with a footswitch, costing roughly £80 to £400. A looper app does the same on a phone, usually free.

The difference is your feet. A pedal is operated by stomping, which means your hands stay on the instrument — essential live, largely irrelevant on a sofa. An app is operated by tapping a screen, which is fine when you are writing and awkward when you are performing.

The vocabulary you will run into

• Base loop — the first phrase you record. It sets the length everything else follows.
• Layer / overdub — a new part recorded on top of what is already playing.
• Loop modes — rules for how a track follows the base loop. Jam Looper has four: strict, soft, loose, and every N repeats of the base loop.
• Undo — removing the last layer. Cheap pedals give you one level; apps usually let you remove any track at any time.
